Session 3 - Section A: The Internal Representation System

Why do some people think and act in a certain way?

Why do we just ‘click’ with some people and not others?

Why do some people frustrate us?

Why do some people get it when we explain things, and others struggle?

It all comes down to our internal representational system – how we represent the world using our senses.

It influences:

We all think and act in a certain way due to the ‘filters’ (modalities) that we see our experiences through. Take for example witnesses of a car crash. There may be ten different people all witness the same car crash, but when the Investigating Officer asks those ten people what they saw, they will generally get ten different answers! This is because everyone sees things differently, dependant upon their prior experiences, how they interpreted those experiences, what meaning they gave to those experiences, their beliefs, values, thoughts, emotions etc, but most importantly, what representation system they primarily use.

When we process information, humans have the following modalities (or senses) to rely upon:

Taste and smell are:

So, we have four primary modalities or representational systems that we use to make sense of the world:

We all use a combination of these modalities, but we each have a primary modality.

Finding out what your primary modality is important, as it will enable you to discover what your primary extra-sensory modality is – ie how you are going to receive your inner voice's messages!
